Create an OS Build Plan for VM guest deployment

The OS installation Build Plans included with IC server provisioning are designed to work with ProLiant hardware. If you attempt to use one of these to install to a Virtual Machine the Build Plan will fail. This section describes modifications that can be made to a Build Plan that will enable it to be run against a VM.

You can create an OS Build Plan to deploy Windows or Linux on a VM guest hosted by the hypervisors listed in the HP Insight Management Support Matrix (available at http://www.hp.com/go/insightcontrol/docs).

The following limitations apply:

  • Only scripted install Build Plans that deploy Windows or Linux operating systems are supported for VM guest deployments because the targets are VM guests. Deploying hypervisor operating systems, image installs, ProLiant HW Build Plans or ProLiant SW Build Plans to a VM guest is not supported.

  • For a VM guest hosted on Hyper-V, deploying a Linux operating system is not supported because the LinuxPE PXE service OS will not boot properly on the VM.

  • For a VM guest hosted on Hyper-V 2012 R2, deploying a Windows operating system using Generation 2 virtual machine, you must disable UEFI secure boot. To disable secure boot mode, right-click on the VM. Go to Settings, selectFirmware Boot from Network and uncheck Enable Secure Boot.

  • Some operating systems do not support VMXNET3 network adapter. If you encounter issues, create you VM using the Flex or e1000 Network adapter.

Requirements for installing on a VM guest:

  • Minimum 2GB of RAM.

  • PXE is first in the boot order. When you create the VM guest for the appropriate operating system to be deployed on it, be sure to modify the guest so that the NIC/PXE is first in the boot order. This is required for the appliance to control the booting of the guest.

Because a VM guest does not contain an iLO device, it cannot be added via the IC server provisioning Add Server functionality. To add the VM guest to IC server provisioning, power it on. Because the NIC/PXE is first in the boot order, it will PXE boot into the default service OS and be automatically registered with the appliance.

To create an OS Build Plan that installs Windows or Linux on a VM guest:

  1. Make a copy of a Windows or Linux ProLiant OS scripted install Build Plan by selecting ActionsSave As from the OS Build Plan screen.

  2. Save the OS Build Plan with a new name.

  3. Edit the new OS Build Plan with the following.

    Delete the following step:

    • Check iLO Service

    • For a Windows scripted installation, also delete the Install and boot into local WinPE step

Optionally, if your Build Plan has problems, delete the following step:

    • ProLiant Drivers for <operating_system> where <operating_system> is the RHEL, SLES or Windows operating system

Optionally, you can remove the following steps which are not needed and should have no effect:

    • Verify Supported Boot Modes

    • Prepare Disks on HP ProLiant Gen8

    • Configure Windows Partitioning Scheme for UEFI

  4. Click OK to save the OS Build Plan.

The OS Build Plan is ready to deploy on a VM guest.
