About network personalization

Network personalization is the configuration of some or all of the various network settings on a server so that they meet the networking requirements of your environment. Insight Control server provisioning has tools to make personalizing the network on your target servers easy.

For information on how to configure networking and some important limitations, see Configure Networking.

The following settings can be controlled through network personalization:

  • Server hostname

  • DNS domain

  • DNS servers

  • DNS suffix search list

  • Windows Workgroup

  • WIN servers

  • For each network interface on the server:

    • Enable/disable

    • Static IP or DHCP/Autoconfigure

    • IPv4/IPv6

    • Static IP addresses/netmask

    • Gateway

    • VLAN ID

Features of network personalization

  • Network personalization can be performed on a single server, where specific names and IP addresses are provided, or on many servers at once, where ranges of names and IP addresses are applied.

  • Network personalization can be performed as part of the OS installation process or after the OS installation while booted to a production OS.

  • Only network properties you actually specify are modified on the target server. Fields left blank are ignored. For example, if you do not specify any DNS servers, the DNS configuration of the target server will not be modified. Any network interfaces set to “As is” (the default) will also not be modified.

  • A View button is provided in the Configure Network screen that allows you to preview the changes that are about to be made. This is particularly useful when personalizing many servers at once.
