What to do if backup file creation, download or restore action fails

The following information identifies possible causes and recommendations for what to do if the backup file creation, download or restore fails.

Backup file not created:

Other related operations are in progress. Only one backup file can be created at a time. A backup file cannot be created during a restore operation or while a previous backup file is being uploaded or downloaded. You should check to verify if another backup or restore operation is running. If another operation is running you will see a progress bar in the Settings screen. A completion is noted in the Activity sidebar. You should wait until the operation is complete and then retry the backup file creation.

Backup file creation is still in progress. Creating a backup file can take several minutes. If the log files are large or if the system is extensive, creating a backup file can take even longer. You should check to see if the backup file creation is still in progress. If the operation is ongoing, there is a progress bar in the Settings screen. Wait until the backup file creation completes. When the operation is complete, it is noted in the Activity sidebar.

Cannot download backup file:

The appliance network is down. Ensure the network is correctly configured and performing as expected.

Other related operations in progress. A backup file cannot be uploaded or downloaded while a backup file creation or restore operation is in progress. Ensure that another backup or restore operation is not running.

Insufficient time to complete. Downloading a large backup file can take several minutes, perhaps more depending on the complexity of the configuration. You may need to wait longer for the operation to complete. You could also consider installing cURL to improve performance for future downloads.

Cannot restore from backup file:

The backup file is incompatible. To restore an appliance from a backup file the appliance must be running the same version of the firmware as the backup file; their version numbers must match exactly. Also the appliance that you run the restore operation on has to have the same network settings as the original appliance. Retry the restore operation with a recent backup that has the same version of the firmware and same network settings.

Restore fails. You will need to create a new appliance from the appliance template/virtual machine and configure the network exactly as it was on the original system. Then try the restore again, or try a different backup file.
