Install an operating system on a UEFI capable ProLiant server

The ProLiant DL580 Gen8Plus is the first ProLiant server that will support UEFI. You can use IC server provisioning to provision UEFI capable servers in either Legacy BIOS boot mode or UEFI boot mode.

To install an OS to a UEFI capable server first put the server into the right boot mode using one of two HP-provided Build Plans:

  • ProLiant HW – Switch to Legacy BIOS boot mode and Power Off

  • ProLiant HW – Switch to UEFI boot mode and Power Off

After running the Build Plan to set the boot mode, you can then run the OS Build Plan. The HP-provided Build Plans have been modified in IC server provisioning 7.3.1, as needed, to work in either Legacy BIOS boot mode or UEFI boot mode. The default is Legacy BIOS boot mode. Note that even though the Build Plan steps understand the UEFI boot mode, not all operating systems support this mode yet. Be sure the OS you are trying to install supports UEFI before attempting to install in this mode.

[NOTE: ]

NOTE: OS Build Plans from previous releases that you have customized may not run in UEFI mode since they may contain steps that had not been modified to work in both Legacy BIOS boot mode and UEFI mode.

See Working with UEFI capable servers for more information on special configurations on UEFI capable servers. See the Insight Control Server Provisioning Build Plans Reference Guide for more information on the boot mode Build Plans. Also note that the OS Build Plans that work with UEFI are limited (see the Insight Management Support Matrix for details on the limitations).
