Perform a boot from SAN installation

Perform the following to allow an HP ProLiant server to boot from SAN:

  1. Make the Fibre Channel HBA the first device listed in the BIOS boot controller order. For HP ProLiant blade servers, this can be accomplished by running the ProLiant HW – System ROM Enable Boot from SAN on Bladeserver Build Plan. Running this also disables the local array controller. For other types of ProLiant servers, this can be set manually by booting the server, pressing F9 to enter the ROM-Based Setup Utility, selecting Boot Controller Order, and making the Fibre Channel HBA the first device in the list.

  2. Configure the boot device on the Fibre Channel HBA to indicate which disk on the SAN to boot from. This can be accomplished by running the ProLiant HW – Fibre Channel HBA Configure Boot Device Build Plan. Refer to Configure the boot device on a Fibre Channel HBA for more information.

[NOTE: ]

NOTE: The Fibre Channel HBA is enabled by default in the BIOS. The steps above might fail if it is not enabled. If it is disabled, you can enable it by booting the server, pressing F9 to enter the ROM–Based Setup Utility, selecting PCI Device Enable/Disable, and enabling the Fibre Channel HBA.
