Deploy a Support Pack for ProLiant (SPP)

A Support Pack for ProLiant (SPP) is an ISO image that contains firmware, drivers, and software packages for Linux and Windows. You can install the Complete ISO image or an SPP Maintenance Release. Occasionally a supplemental SPP is released for special cases but IC server provisioning does not support installing these unless otherwise specified in another document like a white paper.

Insight Control server provisioning allows you to easily install an SPP on your ProLiant server after an operating system is installed. You can do this by either running one of the HP-provided SPP installation Build Plans, or if you want the SPP always installed, you can modify your own OS installation Build Plan to include SPP installation as described below.

Before deploying an SPP, it must be downloaded from the HP website and copied to your Media Server. See Procedure: To download an SPP and Procedure: To copy an SPP to your Media Server for instructions.

The target servers must be booted and running a supported OS.

By default, the SPP steps provided with IC server provisioning Build Plans will install the entire SPP, including all agents, drivers, and firmware. Our steps do allow you to customize the SPP installation by specifying various parameters to the SPP installation tool, HP SUM. See the SPP documentation available from http://www.hp.com/go/spp for details.

Although some SPP logs appear in the IC server provisioning job log when you run the Build Plan, full logs from the SPP are located on the target server as described in the SPP documentation.

IC server provisioning comes with the following HP-provided Build Plans for SPP installation:

  • ProLiant SW – Install Linux SPP

  • ProLiant SW – Install Windows SPP

To install the SPP, simply select the managed servers you wish to deploy to, and then run the appropriate SPP Build Plan provided by HP or one you have customized.

To add SPP installation to a Build Plan, open the appropriate (Windows or Linux) Build Plan and then copy the steps from the HP-provided Build Plan to the one you are customizing. The SPP steps should be placed at the end of your OS installation after the final reboot. Be sure to copy any parameters that go with the steps.
