Before you can run OS Build Plans on a target server, that server must first be added to IC server provisioning. Once servers are added you can run OS Build Plans that install operating systems, capture and deploy images, install firmware updates, or install drivers and utilities from HP Service Packs.
When a server is added to Insight Control server provisioning its name displays in the servers list on the master pane Servers screen. The server is then available to have jobs run on it.
There are multiple ways to add servers to your appliance including the following:
To add a server using its iLO:
-
If your server has no OS on it, simply power it on and it will PXE boot automatically.
-
If your server is a blade, you can use the HP BladeSystem Onboard Administrator to set one time boot to PXE, then power the server on.
-
If your server is not a blade and has an OS on it, you will need to power it on, watch the console, and press the appropriate key when prompted to cause a network boot.
See the HP Insight Control Server Provisioning Administrator Guide for more information on deciding which method to use to add a server.
Server Discovery. When a server is newly discovered and first boots into a Service OS, it is given a special display name to help make that server easy to identify. The display name is assigned according to the following rules:
-
If the server is an HP ProLiant BladeServer, the name is made up of the server's enclosure location information in the form
rack-enclosure-bay
. For example, a server in Rack DC1, Enclosure DevEnc2, and Bay 5, will be named: DC1-DevEnc2-5. -
If the server is an HP ProLiant server that is not a blade, the display name will be the serial number of that server.
-
If the server is a VM, the display name will be the type of VM and the virtual serial number together. For example, a VMware VM might have a display name like this: VMware-42 3b e2 94 62 b7 5a c4.
Also note that once the host name of the server is set as part of an OS installation or a configure network operation, the display name will change to match the new hostname, however, if you have manually set a display name for that server, the display name will never change to match the hostname.
To add a server select Servers from the main menu and then select Actions→Add Server. The input fields on the Add Server screen are shown below.
