Configuring trunking for HPE Virtual Connect 16Gb 24-Port FC Module after an upgrade or with existing configurations

By default, on upgrade, trunking is on.

Prerequisites
  • Make sure that redundant SAN I/O paths exist for all active servers, as this will help prevent a complete outage as you perform the steps to enable trunking.

  • Ensure that the connected ports on the top-of-rack (ToR) switch are able to be trunked together. The hardware trunk area should be consistent for those ports that will be trunked.

Procedure
  1. For each uplink set, on the odd numbered side bays, follow the steps below to configure the Brocade switch to create trunk areas for the uplink set.
    1. Disable the ports connected to the uplink set using the portdisable command.
    2. Create and enable a trunk area for the ports using the porttrunkarea --enable <port-range> -index <index> command.
    3. Enable the ports using the portenable command.
    4. Verify configuration using the porttrunkarea --show enabled command.
    5. Repeat these steps for each remaining uplink set.
      IMPORTANT:

      A brief outage occurs on each uplink set and Fibre Channel network as the ports on the Brocade switch are enabled for trunking.

    6. To verify that the trunk was formed correctly, use the trunkshow command to display all trunks on the switch. The resulting information should match what was configured with the porttrunkarea command.
      NOTE:

      If the trunk was not formed correctly, use the trunkdebug command to troubleshoot. See the Brocade Administrator guide for further details.

  2. Repeat the previous steps for the even numbered bays.

    At this point all uplink sets should be enabled for trunking and all ports should still be linked and traffic should flow normally. You might receive a warning that no trunks have formed for each uplink set, which is expected.
