About HPE Synergy Image Streamer

HPE Image Streamer is a composable infrastructure appliance that hosts remote operating system boot volumes for HPE Synergy servers. Image Streamer also hosts software used to deploy and customize the operating systems for these boot volumes.

HPE OneView automatically discovers the presence of HPE Image Streamer appliances once they are inserted into HPE Synergy frames and cabled into the appropriate interconnect modules. When you add a deployment server, you are configuring the Image Streamer appliances to support deployment.

With HPE Image Streamer hosting the operating system boot volumes and with persistent operating system and/or application data saved on other remote storage, these HPE Synergy servers become stateless servers. This stateless server arrangement enables you to assign and un-assign servers to a server profile -- providing virtual machine-like management. Virtual machine-like management operations for these servers include:

  • Move server profile, change or replace physical server (un-assign server from server profile then assign a different server)

  • Hibernate the server profile, release server for other use (un-assign server from server profile)

  • Restore server profile, apply original or different workload to server (assign server to server profile)

HPE Image Streamer can be used in a multi-frame HA configuration or a single frame non-HA configuration.

Multi-frame. A pair of HPE Image Streamers in different frames provide operating system boot volume access in an active-active HA mode suitable for production environments.

Single frame. A single HPE Image Streamer in a single frame provides non-HA operation system boot volume access not suitable for production environments. This non-production configuration is intended for test and development of Image Streamer artifacts and proof-of-concept activities.
