Manage the frequency of control messages through the LACP timer

When creating an uplink set for Ethernet logical interconnects, you can choose the connection mode:

  • Automatic—Enables the uplinks to form aggregation groups using IEEE 802.3ad LACP.

  • Failover—Uses the Preferred link as the active link to the external networks. Other ports are used as standby connections.

For Ethernet interconnects with an Automatic connection mode, LACP aggregates as many ports in the uplink port group as possible into a LAG. As part of the LACP negotiation to form a LAG, the interconnect sends a request for the frequency of control messages. You can set this frequency through the LACP timer. The frequency can be:

  • Short—Every 1 second with a 3 second timeout
  • Long—Every 30 seconds with a 90 second timeout

Use the Long setting to prevent a timeout and loss of communication during an external switch firmware upgrade.

Set the LACP timer when you create a logical interconnect group or change the timer when you add or edit an uplink set.


Minimum required privileges: Infrastructure administrator or Network administrator

  1. Create a logical interconnect group and add an uplink set.
    • Select Ethernet for Type.

    • Select Automatic for Connection Mode.

    • Select Short or Long for LACP timer.

    • Add a network and uplink port.

  2. To verify that the LACP timer changes were set, locate the changes in the Uplink sets view.
  3. From the Logical Interconnect Groups screen or the Logical Interconnects screen, select the logical interconnect, and then edit the uplink set.

    Select Short or Long for LACP timer.

    The logical interconnect is marked as noncompliant. For more information, see Update the logical interconnect configuration from the logical interconnect group.

  4. To verify that the LACP timer changes were made, locate the changes in the Uplink sets view.
