Reimage the appliance with the preloaded USB drive

IMPORTANT: Should I reset the frame to factory settings?

If you intend to restore the HPE Synergy Composer settings from a backup file after it is reimaged, and that backup file contains the management configuration for the enclosures it managed, you must not reset the managed frames to factory settings.

Otherwise, you must reset the frame components managed by that Composer to their factory settings.

When you must reset all the frame components, make sure that you do not factory reset the frame link modules while the Composer is being reimaged. The frame link modules must be reset after the Composer is reimaged.

Prerequisites
Use this procedure to reimage an HPE Synergy Composer that you either want to add to the current configuration or that must replace a defective Composer. Reimaging a Composer ensures that it has the same firmware version as any other Composer in the configuration.
CAUTION:

This operation destroys data on the reimaged HPE Synergy Composer.

Procedure
  1. If there are two HPE Synergy Composer appliances in the frame, identify the Composer that you want to reimage.
  2. If the Composers form a high availability cluster, move the peer appliance (the one you do not want to reimage) to standby and physically remove the standby appliance.
    NOTE:

Remove one of the cluster appliances to ensure that the high availability error recovery does not interfere with the reimage.

  3. Insert the preloaded USB flash drive into the USB port of the HPE Synergy Composer that you reimage.
    1 USB port
  4. Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends using the HPE Synergy console to monitor the reimaging and rebooting operations.
    1. Connect a monitor cable to the monitor port and a USB cable to the USB port on either:
      • The front panel module on the front of the frame.

      • On either HPE Synergy Frame Link Module on the rear of the frame

      • An HPE Synergy 4-Port Frame Link Module USB Adapter connected to an HPE Synergy 4-Port Frame Link Module. You must install a frame link module in the frame link module bay.

On connection, the Synergy console is displayed.

  5. Connect a monitor to the frame with the monitor cable.
  6. Connect a USB keyboard and mouse to the USB ports on the monitor, and connect the monitor USB to the frame with the USB cable.

Alternatively, connect the USB keyboard and mouse to a USB hub connected to the frame.

  7. Select the HPE Synergy Composer to monitor from the Appliances submenu.

    A serial console window opens.

  8. Press Enter.
  9. Locate the Power/Reset LED indicator on the HPE Synergy appliance front panel. If there are two Composer appliances, locate the indicator for the one you reimage.
    1 Pinhole within Power/Reset button
  10. Use the applicator or a paperclip to press the pinhole in the Power/Reset button for more than 10 seconds.
    NOTE:

Momentarily pressing this button causes the HPE Synergy Composer to reboot, but does not reimage it.

After 10 seconds, the Active LED starts to flash, and the Power/Reset LED indicator turns amber, which means that the reimage process was triggered.

  11. Release the pinhole button as soon as you see the flashing Active LED.

If connected, the Synergy console shows progress messages. The front panel UID flashes blue throughout the reimage process.

After reimaging, the HPE Synergy Composer reboots, updates the firmware to the version stored on the preloaded USB drive, and starts HPE OneView. Reimaging must be completed in approximately 90 minutes; at which time the initial HPE OneView login screen appears in the HPE Synergy console.

  12. Verify that the HPE Synergy Composer is reimaged by examining the firmware version number either on the Settings > Appliance screen or by using the View details command of Maintenance console.
  13. Optional. Remove the preloaded USB flash drive and store it for possible future use.
  14. Restore the HPE Synergy Composer from a backup file using the HPE OneView GUI or the appliance maintenance console.
