Growing a logical enclosure

The HPE Synergy grow functionality enables the users to increase the compute capacity by adding enclosures to a HPE Synergy logical enclosure, without interrupting the network traffic. The grow functionality is applicable only for growing the Virtual Connect Network logical interconnect portion of a logical enclosure. You can physically grow your HPE Synergy configuration from a single frame to a maximum of five HPE Synergy frames using Interconnect Link Modules. In HPE OneView, the logical growth occurs by growing the logical enclosure. The HPE Synergy frames are added to the logical enclosure by associating a new enclosure group with the logical enclosure and performing an update from group. HPE OneView completes the change without disassociating frames from existing logical enclosures or causing an outage to the existing environment.
IMPORTANT:
To avoid traffic loss or a network outage requiring reestablishment of a valid configuration, you must ensure the following:
  • Do not change any Serial Attached Storage or Fibre Channel components in the physical enclosure, logical enclosure, or logical interconnect group until the entire grow process has successfully completed.

  • You are running version 3.0.0 or later of HPE OneView.

  • Do not reset the Frame Link Modules on enclosures already included in the active configuration.

When physically growing to two or more frames, you must use the same model of Interconnect Link Modules in a bay set. The maximum speed of all downlinks in that bay set is based on the speed of the Interconnect Link Modules being used as well as the speeds of the mezzanine cards in the attached servers. For example, if the HPE Synergy 10Gb Interconnect Link Module is used, then the maximum speed of all downlinks in that logical interconnect is 10Gb.

HPE Synergy frames configured to support HPE Synergy Image Streamer can grow from three to a four- or five-frame configuration.

You can grow a single-frame redundant configuration up to five frames redundant, or a highly available configuration, depending on the interconnect models inserted in each bay set.

When you attempt to grow into an unsupported grow configuration, HPE OneView returns an error with resolution to rectify the errors.

Growing a redundant configuration

You can grow a single-frame, redundant configuration up to a five-frame redundant configuration.

Growing a high-availability configuration

NOTE:

If growing from one enclosure to a highly available multi-enclosure configuration, first grow to a two enclosure highly available configuration, and then grow a second time if more than two enclosures are in the target configuration.

To grow a single-frame, redundant configuration to a two-frame, high-availability configuration, a technician must move the master interconnect from the B-side of the existing HPE Synergy frame to the B-side of the second HPE Synergy frame. The technician then adds an Interconnect Link Module to the B-side of the existing HPE Synergy frame and to the A-side of the second HPE Synergy frame.
