About local storage and mezzanine storage controllers

External logical drives on a mezzanine storage controller are backed by a SAS logical JBOD. Once the logical drive gets instantiated (that is, not pending), you can view the details of the associated SAS logical JBOD on the Logical Interconnects screen.

Effects of changing the mezzanine storage controller mode (Gen9 and earlier server hardware):
  • Changing between HBA and RAID causes all logical drives or logical JBODs to be deleted from the controller.

  • Changing from managed manually to HBA or RAID causes all logical drives or logical JBODs to be deleted from the controller.

  • Changing from HBA or RAID to managed manually results in logical drives or logical JBODs already configured on the controller to remain attached to the storage controller with no data loss. However, the controller configuration settings and the logical drive tracking data are discarded from the server profile.

Effects of starting or stopping management of controller configuration (Gen10 server hardware):
  • Changing from managed manually to managed does not cause existing logical JBODs to be deleted. However, if these JBODs have pre-existing RAID configuration, such RAID configuration will not be included in the profile and a warning alert appears indicating that the RAID configuration cannot be managed.

  • Changing from managed to managed manually results in logical drives or logical JBODs already configured on the controller to remain attached to the storage controller with no data loss. However, the controller configuration settings and the logical drive tracking data are discarded from the server profile.
