Remote backups in HPE OneView

A remote backup from an HPE OneView appliance automatically downloads a backup to either a SCP or SFTP server.

Keeping an up-to-date backup is the only way to recover the appliance in case of a catastrophic failure, such as, disk drive failure on the appliance, whether it is the storage on a VM appliance or a physical drive on an HPE Synergy composer.

You must specify a location where you want to back up the data. After you specify a location, you can manually perform the backups. You have the option to backup data either to a remote server or to a local computer through a browser.

A remote backup uses the SCP or SFTP protocol over a Secure Shell (SSH) connection to the remote server. Remote backup supports only credential based authentication.

The security feature of SCP and SFTP must validate that the configured remote backup server is connected to the appliance with a host key.

HPE OneView releases prior to 4.2 require you to retrieve the server SSH host key and use it while configuring the remote backup.

HPE OneView 4.2 and later automatically obtains the configured remote backup server SSH host key and prompts you to confirm whether the SSH host key finger print matches with the configured remote backup server.

To set up remote backup in HPE OneView, you must establish the connection by configuring the remote backup server host name or IP address, user name, password, and SSH host key. You can use the HPE OneView Edit Settings > Backup panel or HPE OneView Settings > Backup > Action > Edit Backup Settings page to configure and establish the connection.
