Hypervisor cluster profile consistency validation

HPE OneView automatically checks the consistency of the hypervisor cluster profile. Consistency checking is validating the hypervisor cluster profile to ensure:

  • The configurations of the cluster and the hypervisors in the cluster match the intended configurations in the hypervisor cluster profile.

  • The intended configurations on the hypervisor cluster profile, such as networking and storage configurations, are valid with the configurations defined in the associated server profile template.

  • The server profiles linked to the member hypervisor profiles match the intended configurations defined in the server profile template.

Situations that lead to inconsistencies:
  • Hypervisor cluster profile is configured differently than the server profile template.

The hypervisor template network and storage configurations defined in the hypervisor cluster profile are validated with the template physical server configurations in the server profile template. The template network configurations for a hypervisor are defined in the hypervisor cluster profile if Manage vSwitches is enabled and these configurations are derived from the server profile template configurations.

    NOTE:

The following changes in the server profile template or network set results in inconsistency in the corresponding hypervisor cluster profile:

    • Changes in the network set that is used in the server profile template connection to add a network or remove a network.

    • Changes in the server profile template to add, update, or remove an Ethernet network connection.

    • Changes in the server profile template to add or update a SAN storage volume.

    Alert

The hypervisor cluster profile is not consistent with its server profile template - This alert appears, and requires manual remediation.

    Manual remediation

Perform the instructions in the alert, and edit the hypervisor cluster profile. This action fixes the inconsistencies in the template configurations between the hypervisor cluster profile and the associated server profile template. The vSwitch configuration is automatically rebuilt based on the connections defined in the server profile template. The storage volumes in the hypervisor cluster profile are automatically added or allowed to be removed to match the server profile template. After this inconsistency is remediated, any inconsistencies in the configurations of the member hypervisors or server profiles from the updated template configurations are identified and reported.

  • vCenter hypervisor cluster is inconsistent with the hypervisor cluster profile definition.

The hypervisor cluster and its configurations are validated with the hypervisor cluster profile definition.

    NOTE:

If you make any of the following changes in either HPE OneView or VMware vCenter, it will result in mismatch and inconsistencies.

    • Change the name of the cluster.

    • Enable or disable VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS).

    • Enable or disable VMware High Availability.

    Alert

Cluster is inconsistent - This alert appears with the Make cluster consistent link.

    Automatic remediation

Perform the instructions in the alert. The Make cluster consistent option nondisruptively fixes all the inconsistencies of the hypervisor cluster to match the hypervisor cluster profile definition. The inconsistent fields are automatically updated with the values from the hypervisor cluster profile to resolve inconsistencies.

  • One or more hypervisor profiles are inconsistent with the hypervisor cluster profile.

The hypervisors are validated with the hypervisor cluster profile definition. The inconsistencies in the server profile associated with the hypervisor profile are treated as inconsistencies in the hypervisor profile. These inconsistencies roll up to the hypervisor cluster profile.

    NOTE:
    • If you change network and storage configurations in the hypervisor cluster profile to match the server profile template, it will result in inconsistences of its associated hypervisor profiles.

    • If changes to the hypervisor profiles occur due to any of the following changes, it will result in inconsistencies with the corresponding hypervisor cluster profile.

      • Changes in the server profile cause server profile inconsistencies.

      • Changes in the server profile template cause inconsistent server profiles.

      • Changes made to the hypervisors using a hypervisor manager outside of HPE OneView cause inconsistent hypervisor configurations.

      • Changes in the networking and storage configurations defined in the hypervisor cluster profile cause inconsistent hypervisor profiles.

    • If the hypervisor cluster profile is configured to not manage vSwitches, the vSwitches and port groups are not validated for consistency.

    • If the hypervisor cluster profile is configured to manage vSwitches and the option to configure the port group is disabled, inconsistencies of the general-purpose port groups are not validated.

    Alert

1 or more hypervisor profiles are inconsistent - This alert appears with the Make hypervisor profiles consistent link.

    Automatic remediation

For inconsistencies that allow automatic remediation, perform the instructions in the alert. The Make hypervisor profiles consistent option nondisruptively fixes all the inconsistencies of the hypervisor profiles in the hypervisor cluster profile. It sequentially addresses one active hypervisor profile at a time. If the fix causes server downtime (workloads are not impacted), HPE OneView places the hypervisor in maintenance mode, fixes the inconsistencies, and moves the hypervisor back to active mode. If the hypervisor was in maintenance state before applying the update, the hypervisor is retained in maintenance state. If a hypervisor profile fails anytime during the process, the task is aborted.

    NOTE:

The remediation fails when you modify the port group name that is being used by VMs running in the cluster.

    Manual remediation

For inconsistencies that require manual remediation, perform the manual instructions listed in the Make hypervisor profiles consistent alert.

  • Both the cluster and one or more hypervisor profiles are inconsistent.

The hypervisor cluster and its configurations are not consistent with the hypervisor cluster profile definition. The hypervisors are not consistent with the hypervisor cluster profile definition.

    Alert

Cluster and 1 or more hypervisor profiles are inconsistent - This alert appears with the Make cluster and hypervisor profiles consistent link.

    Automatic remediation

Perform the instructions in the alert. The Make cluster and hypervisor profiles consistent option non-disruptively fixes the inconsistencies of the hypervisor cluster, and the hypervisor profiles.

    NOTE:

Hypervisor cluster and hypervisor consistency checks are computed after any hypervisor cluster profile or hypervisor profile operations. Checks are also computed for hypervisor cluster or hypervisor configurations changes that are managed using the hypervisor cluster profile. HPE OneView checks the hypervisor manager events to identify these changes at a regular interval of two minutes.

In a scaled setup, the hypervisor manager events take more time to arrive. In such environments, it may take a maximum of 10 minutes for consistency check alerts to be raised or cleared.
