Installing a USB RDX drive

The half‑height media bays 1 and 2 support the installation of a USB RDX drive option.

Prerequisites
Before you perform this procedure:
  • In a server that has the maximum number of drives installed in box 2 and box 3, and the LTO tape drive is present in the half-height media bay 1, make sure that the fan cage is installed.

  • Make sure that you have the following items available:

    • RDX USB cable

    • LTO/RDX power extension Y-cable

    • RDX drive option – The USB and/or power cables that ship with the drive option will not be used in this server.

    • T-15 Torx screwdriver

Procedure
  1. Remove the front bezel.
  2. Power down the server.
  3. Remove all power:
    1. Disconnect each power cord from the power source.
    2. Disconnect each power cord from the server.
  4. Disconnect all peripheral cables from the server.
  5. Do one of the following:
  6. Remove the access panel.
  7. Remove the air baffle.
  8. If installed, remove the fan cage.
  9. Remove the blank from the half-height media bay 1 or 2.
  10. Install the RDX drive screws.

These screws are included in the RDX drive option kit. If you are installing an RDX drive that does not include its own mounting screws, use the preinstalled media drive spare screws.

    Installing the RDX drive screws
  11. Slide the RDX drive into the half‑height media bay 1 or 2 until it clicks into place.

Installing the USB RDX drive into the media bay
  12. Observe the guidelines for managing cables.
  13. Connect the RDX drive cables:
    1. Connect the USB cable to the RDX drive and to an internal USB port.

For optimum performance, Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends connecting the RDX+ drive to the internal USB 3.0, not 2.0 port. The drive is backward compatible with USB 2.0, but the performance will be degraded.

    2. Connect the RDX end of the power extension Y-cable to the RDX drive.
    3. Connect the common end of the power extension Y-cable to the drive box 1 power connector.

To view the cable routing, see USB RDX drive cabling.

  14. If the fan cage was removed, do the following:
    1. Make sure that all the system cables that are routed through the front cable channel are properly secured in the metal cable tabs. This is done to prevent system damage due to cables being inadvertently caught under the fan cage.
    2. Install the fan cage.
  15. Install the air baffle.
  16. Install the access panel.
  17. Do one of the following:
  18. Connect all peripheral cables to the server.
  19. Connect each power cord to the server.
  20. Connect each power cord to the power source.
  21. Power up the server.
  22. Install the front bezel.
  23. Perform the verification and configuration procedures required by the drive option.

The installation is complete.
