Simplified and Advanced user interfaces

Two web interfaces are provided for managing the controller: the Simplified UI and the Advanced UI.

  • The Simplified UI provides access to the most commonly configured controller options, and features wizards to make configuration tasks easy. It is organized into three main sections:

    • Homepage: Displays an overview of the key information about the controller and its APs. See Homepage.

    • Dashboard: Displays graphical status information about the controller, APs, and wireless clients. See Dashboard.

    • Views: This is where you define configuration settings and manage controlled APs. See Views.

  • The Advanced UI enables you to configure advanced features on the controller to fine tune its operation for specific network topologies. The first time you connect to the controller, you will see the Advanced UI.

If you are creating a deployment that requires one of the following features, initial configuration of the controller ( or configuration of certain specific settings) must be performed using the Advanced UI:

    • Mobility traffic manager (MTM) with distributed traffic distribution to specific home networks.

    • Discovery of APs on layer 3 networks.

    • Authentication of APs before the controller accepts to manages them.

    • Deployments that use multiple controllers on the same network.

    • Using radio resource management (RRM) to optimize wireless capacity, coverage, and usage across all the AP radios on a network.

    • Using the intrusion detection system (IDS) to proactively detect potential threats to the wireless network.

    • Controller teaming. (When teaming is enabled, the Simplified UI cannot be used.)

    • Configuring trunk ports on an MSM720.

    • Extensive customization of the captive portal. (Once customized in the Advanced UI, the captive portal cannot be edited in the Simplified UI.)

    • Using a property management system (PMS) with the captive portal for the bill to room feature.

    • Exposing devices with static NAT mappings.
