Install an operating system on a UEFI capable ProLiant server

ProLiant servers with UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) are supported. You can use IC server provisioning to provision UEFI capable servers in either Legacy BIOS boot mode or UEFI boot mode.

To install an OS to a UEFI capable server first put the server into the correct boot mode using one of two Hewlett Packard Enterprise provided Build Plans:

  • ProLiant HW – Switch to Legacy BIOS boot mode and Power Off

  • ProLiant HW – Switch to UEFI boot mode and Power Off

After running the Build Plan to set the boot mode, you can then run an OS Build Plan. The Hewlett Packard Enterprise provided Build Plans have been modified starting with IC server provisioning 7.3.1, to work in either Legacy BIOS boot mode or UEFI boot mode. The default is Legacy BIOS boot mode. Note that even though the Build Plan steps support the UEFI boot mode, not all operating systems support this mode yet. Be sure the OS you are trying to install supports UEFI before attempting to install in this mode.

[NOTE: ]

NOTE: OS Build Plans from previous releases that you have customized may not run in UEFI mode because they might contain steps that had not been modified to work in both Legacy BIOS boot mode and UEFI mode.

For more information on special configurations on UEFI capable servers, see Working with UEFI capable servers. For more information on the boot mode Build Plan, see the Insight Control Server Provisioning Build Plans Reference Guides. Also note that the OS Build Plans that work with UEFI are limited (for details on the limitations, see the Insight Management Support Matrix).
