Networks in CloudSystem Foundation

CloudSystem is built on OpenStack Networking functionality. The underlying network infrastructure is managed by a Software Defined Networking (SDN) appliance. Multiple Network Node appliances manage network services, such as DHCP. A Proxy appliance runs the OpenStack agents for ESX clusters in a single vCenter Server.

All of these virtual appliances are automatically created when CloudSystem Foundation is configured. You can use the CLI to access and manage these appliances. Refer to the HP CloudSystem 8.0 Administrator Guide at Enterprise Information Library for additional information.

CloudSystem Foundation uses three types of networks:

  • Private Networks are restricted and can be accessed only by virtual machine instances assigned to the network.

  • Provider Networks connect a physical data center with any number of virtual machine instances.

  • The External Network allows you to access Private Networks for maintenance or troubleshooting. An External Network is a special type of Provider Network that lets you use Floating IPs to access a Private Network.

Virtual machine instances are not directly attached to the External Network. The Network Nodes are attached to the External Network. The Network Nodes use NAT to route internal traffic to the External Network.

External Networks

An External Network is automatically created during CloudSystem Foundation installation.

[IMPORTANT: ]

IMPORTANT: Do not edit the initial configuration of this network.

Additional configuration steps that must be performed to complete External Network configuration:

  • Add a subnet. (Do not enable DHCP.)

  • Create a router.

  • Create a Floating IP.

After you set up the External Network components, you can use the CloudSystem Portal to create a virtual router that connects the External Network to instances on Private Networks.
