HPE server setup checklist

Follow the list and check off each section as you complete it.

Save time by planning for your installation site, operating system, and backup power now:

Select an optimum environment at your installation site that meets the detailed site requirements described in the server user guide, including:
  • Space and airflow requirements

  • Temperature requirements

  • Power requirements

  • Electrical grounding requirements

Verify operating system support—For information about operating systems supported by ProLiant servers, see the operating system support matrices at http://www.hpe.com/info/supportos

Secure backup power—Protect the server from power fluctuations and temporary interruptions with a regulating uninterruptible power supply. This device protects the hardware from damage caused by power surges and voltage spikes and keeps the system in operation during a power failure.

For more preinstallation information, see the server user guide for your server below.

Now gather these items before powering on your server for the first time:

OS installation media and product key (Windows, Linux, VMware ESX)

Installation can be from disc, network share, FTP, or USB. Be sure to have installation keys and read any implementation notices that accompany the OS.

Network connectivity

Ensure that the network connection is active.

Internet connectivity

Verify Internet access from your business network. Make a note of the gateway IP address, you may need it later.

USB storage device

A small portable data storage device, often called a thumb drive, which plugs into any USB port. USB drives are ideal for storing information like a Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP), and OS installation media.

Server networking plan

If you do not have DHCP enabled on the network, you must have networking details ready: An IP address to assign, subnet mask, gateway address, and DNS name. For initial setup, it is faster to allow DHCP assignment of these details by connecting your iLO to your production network.

Documentation

Every HPE ProLiant Server comes with the following:
  • Rack server hardware installation kit and instructions (for rack servers)

  • Getting started card

Find the detailed user guide for your server at www.hpe.com/info/enterprise/docs.

HPE Passport account

To use the remote support features embedded in your server, you must have an HPE Passport account. For more information, see http://www.hpe.com/info/insightonline.
